Louisiana Trustees Release Funds to Support Monitoring of Fish and Marine Mammal Research

In July, the Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group approved funding for three important activities to inform restoration planning and projects in the Gulf of Mexico. You can view and download the approved resolution and scopes of work here.

Coastwide Fish and Shellfish Monitoring

With this activity, we’ll gather data assessing fish, shellfish and their associated habitats in Louisiana’s basins over time.

  • The first year of a five-year fisheries-independent monitoring plan will result in valuable data for nearshore habitats and resources targeted for restoration, including coastal wetlands

Florida Trustees Release Draft Restoration Plan I

The Florida Trustee Implementation Group, released its Draft Restoration Plan I and Environmental Assessment (PDF, 537 pg). The draft plan is consistent with the Trustees’ Programmatic Restoration Plan and proposes projects for restoring natural resources and services injured or lost as a result in Florida caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

In light of the impacts of Hurricane Michael on our coastal communities and resources, the Florida trustees extended public comment on the draft plan to December 28, 2018. More information on how to provide public comment is below.

Alabama Releases Second Restoration Plan

The Alabama Trustee Implementation Group has approved its second Restoration Plan and Environmental Assessment (PDF, 1,218 pg) to address natural resource injuries from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The plan and appendices are listed below. This restoration plan focuses on restoration alternatives that will:

  • Restore and benefit wetlands, coastal, and nearshore habitats, including some on federally managed lands.

Mississippi Trustees Release Notice Canceling Three Components of the Restoring Living Shorelines Early Restoration Project

The Mississippi Trustee Implementation Group released a Notice of Project Change (PDF, 4 pg) canceling three components of the Restoring Living Shorelines and Reefs in Mississippi Estuaries early restoration project approved by the Trustees in 2015.

This Phase IV Early Restoration Project included a total of eight components in four bays: St. Louis Bay, the Back Bay of Biloxi and vicinity, Graveline Bay, and Grand Bay. Construction of up to 4.1 miles of living shoreline and breakwaters, approximately 267 acres of subtidal reef habitat creation, and 5 acres of intertidal reef habitat creation

Island Restoration Project Expected to Play Key Role in Future of Brown Pelican

The Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group’s efforts to restore Queen Bess Island were lauded recently when state officials celebrated the 50th anniversary of the reintroduction of the state bird, the brown pelican, to the Louisiana coast.

Although not widely known, the Pelican State lost all of its brown pelicans for about a decade in the 1960’s.

Prior to that, in the early 1900’s Louisiana’s brown pelican population was estimated at 50,000 to 80,000. By 1963, however, the use of the chemical DDT took a huge toll on many bird species, including the brown pelican. Sadly, the bird was no

Pre-construction Monitoring Activities Kick Off on North Breton Island Louisiana

Trustee staff and partners working to restore bird habitat on North Breton Island recently began scientific testing of the sand and invertebrates that live there, to prepare for the upcoming construction phase. The island’s restoration is one part of our ambitious, $318 million Louisiana Outer Coast Restoration Project.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S Geologic Survey biologists took sand samples to study and determine the abundance and species composition of the worms, crustaceans and other invertebrates that call the island’s shoreline home. These small animals at the bottom of the

Information Available from Trustees July 18 Workshop and July 19 Annual Public Meeting

Outreach materials are now available from the July 18 and 19 Deepwater Horizon Natural Resource Trustees' public events in Gulfport and Long Beach, Mississippi. The events were held to help educate and update the public on restoration in the Gulf of Mexico.

The first, a community outreach workshop on July 18 in Gulfport, helped community members and stakeholders learn more about restoration funding and processes, and how to get involved in proposing restoration projects.

The second was the Trustees’ third annual public meeting held in Long Beach at the University of Southern Mississippi on

Louisiana Trustees Release Final Restoration Plan #4 for Recreational Use and Nutrient Reduction

The Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group released its Final Restoration Plan and Environmental Assessment #4 (PDF, 484pg), which selects projects to restore lost public recreational uses and reduce agricultural nutrient runoff in Louisiana’s coastal watersheds injured by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Recreational Strategies

The Deepwater Horizon spill oiled shorelines and resulted in the closure of waterways, parks, and other coastal areas in Louisiana resulting in decreased access to recreational fishing and camping, as well as other outdoor activities which diminished the public’s

Louisiana Trustees Release Final Restoration Plan #2 to Restore Lost Recreational Opportunities

The Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group released its Final Restoration Plan and Environmental Assessment #2: Provide and Enhance Recreational Opportunities (PDF, 320 pgs) which describes and selects projects intended to restore for lost recreational use opportunities caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
