Almost $12 Million in New Coastal Monitoring Funding Approved in Louisiana

The Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group has approved approximately $11.7 million to support the Coastwide Reference Monitoring System (CRMS). This monitoring system, initiated in 2016 by the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) program, was designed to monitor the effectiveness of restoration actions at multiple, scales from individual projects to the influence of projects on the entire coastal landscape.

Because we recognize the critical role data plays in ecosystem restoration planning, we have been using the CRMS data collection and management system in

Louisiana Trustees Approve Four Projects to Restore Oysters and Marine Mammals

The Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group has approved the Final Restoration Plan/Environmental Assessment #5: Living Coastal and Marine Resources – Marine Mammals and Oysters (PDF, 243 pages).

We released the draft restoration plan in March 2020 and accepted public comment through April 20, 2020. This final plan will replenish and protect living coastal and marine resources (specifically, oysters and marine mammals) in the Louisiana Restoration Area. One project approved in the plan will focus on increasing capacity to respond to marine mammal strandings, and the other three will focus on

Birds of a Feather Get Tagged Together

The Colonial Nesting Wading Bird Tracking and Habitat Use Assessment project, approved September 2018 in the Alabama Trustee Implementation Group’s second restoration plan, is now underway. The purpose of this $1.5 million project is to collect information on wading bird ranges, movements and other important aspects of habitat use for future planning to restore wading bird species in Alabama injured by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The project relies heavily on the use of electronic transmitters attached to captured birds.

Protecting Nesting Loons in Minnesota by Getting the Lead Out!

Help is on the way for common loons thanks to a project approved by the Open Ocean Trustees in their first post-settlement restoration plan. Common loons nest around Minnesota’s lakes each year after the spring thaw. Each winter, they migrate south, including to the Gulf of Mexico, where many were injured by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The loon restoration project aims to help restore the bird population in a number of ways, including by reducing exposure to lead-based fishing tackle. Other parts of the project include acquiring loon breeding habitat and providing nesting platforms.
