Join the Trustees for their Annual Public Meeting Webinar July 16

The Trustee Council will hold its fifth annual public meeting via webinar this year due to current nationwide health concerns. The meeting date is July 16, 2020. The webinar is open to everyone and we encourage your attendance and participation.

During this meeting, we will present updates on the progress made by the Trustee Council and in each of the seven Restoration Areas. This meeting will also serve as the annual public meeting for the Regionwide Trustee Implementation Group. We’ll also provide an opportunity for public comments after the updates are presented.

Initial Open Ocean Monitoring and Adaptive Management Priorities Released

The Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group released an updated Open Ocean Monitoring and Adaptive Management Strategy (PDF, 23 pages). The strategy includes the Trustees’ initial priorities for information needed to help evaluate the outcomes of restoration, assess progress towards  restoration goals, and inform restoration planning and implementation. The Trustees are also hosting a webinar on July 22, 2020 to present the strategy. Registration information is below.

Rescued from Deepwater Horizon, a Resilient Native Returns to Queen Bess Island

Ten years ago, a brown pelican was rescued from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. He was eventually returned to the waters of the Gulf, but before being released was fit with a leg band bearing his new name—A04. And now, A04 has become part of an even bigger success story than its survival alone might suggest. He's nesting on Queen Bess Refuge—one of thousands of nesting pairs that are making the first post-restoration nesting season on there a huge success.

Florida Shorebird Surveys Underway Thanks to Creative Staffing

Post-predator control shorebird surveys are underway on St. Vincent Island, Florida and will continue through September. The information gathered will be compared against data gathered as part of an Early Restoration Phase II avian habitat enhancement project, when predator numbers were high. This comparison will enable biologists to see a “before and after picture” to determine the success of their predator control activities.

Gateway to Weeks Bay Conserved for Future Generations

The Alabama Trustee Implementation Group is pleased to announce the acquisition of the East Gateway Tract in Weeks Bay. Located at the mouth of the Bay and adjacent to Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve holdings, the State of Alabama acquired the tract for the purposes of protecting and conserving marine, coastal, estuarine, and riparian habitats injured in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. We approved the East Gateway Land Acquisition Project in our second post-settlement restoration plan, which was approved in September 2018.

Louisiana Trustees Initiate Restoration Plan #7 for Wetlands, Coastal, and Nearshore Habitats and Birds

The Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group is beginning the process of drafting a Deepwater Horizon restoration plan to address the restoration goals of “Restore and Conserve Habitat” and “Replenish and Protect Living Coastal and Marine Resources”.

The plan will consider projects under the “Wetlands, Coastal, and Nearshore Habitats” and “Birds” restoration types. Development of the Restoration Plan will be consistent with the Trustees’ Programmatic Damage Assessment and Restoration Plan, the Oil Pollution Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, their implementing regulations, and all

Mississippi Trustee Implementation Group Releases Second Draft Restoration Plan

The Mississippi Trustee Implementation Group has released its second draft restoration plan for public review and comment through May 22, 2020.  The Plan addresses some of the injuries to various coastal habitats and oysters from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Mississippi Restoration Area.  

The Draft Restoration Plan II and Environmental Assessment: Wetlands, Coastal, and Nearshore Habitats and Oysters (PDF, 211 pages) proposes four projects for implementation.
