Louisiana Trustees Propose Changes to Point-Aux-Chenes Small Boat Launch Project

The Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group has released a draft supplemental environmental assessment (PDF, 43 pages) proposing changes to the Point-Aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area (PACWMA) Recreational Use Enhancement Project. We invite you to comment on the draft supplemental environmental assessment through March 2, 2020.

Louisiana Approves Funding for a Programmatic Monitoring and Adaptive Management Strategy

The Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group has approved $507,237 in Monitoring and Adaptive Management (MAM) funding to facilitate the development of a programmatic MAM strategy for the Louisiana Restoration Area. Development of the strategy will refine our restoration objectives, and will include:

  • Outlining the role of adaptive management in our restoration planning and program management.
  • Identifying monitoring and adaptive management priorities that support our restoration planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Informing decision making for prioritization and funding of MAM

Information Available from Texas’ Annual Meeting Presentation

The Texas Trustee Implementation Group held its 2019 annual public meeting on December 4, 2019 via an online video presentation. The presentation included an update on the work we have accomplished since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. We highlighted a few of our ongoing restoration projects and presented plans for future efforts.

As part of the video presentation, we also discussed the new report on Texas coastal waters nutrient reduction strategies. The report is designed to address eutrophication and its effects on Texas’ coastal waters.

Florida Schoolchildren Happy to Share Park with Crayfish

A new public park located along the shore of North Bay and McKitchen’s Bayou in Lynn Haven, Florida, is guaranteed to bring hours of fun for local residents. Once completed, in early 2021, the park will provide access to the surrounding coastal areas and new recreational facilities, and will preserve upland and wetland habitats. In recognition of the rare Panama City crayfish and its onsite habitat, the park will also include a giant crayfish climbing structure, a request of the students of nearby Deer Point Elementary School.

Alabama Releases Final Plan With Seven Recreational Use and Bird Projects

The Alabama Trustee Implementation Group has approved its third Restoration Plan and Environmental Assessment (PDF, 132 pages) to address natural resource injuries from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This restoration plan includes five projects to address lost recreational uses and two projects for the restoration of birds.

Lost Recreational Use:

  • Perdido River Land Acquisition (Molpus Tract)

  • Bayfront Park Restoration and Improvement Phases IIa and IIb

  • Gulf State Park Pier Renovation

  • Perdido Beach Public Access Coastal Protection

  • Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge

Open Ocean 2019 Annual Meeting Presentation, Materials Available

The Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group held its annual public meeting via an interactive webinar on December 12, 2019. During the meeting, we presented updates on the Open Ocean Restoration Area’s early restoration projects, first and second restoration plans, and monitoring and adaptive management activities. Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group Asking for Restoration Ideas

The Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group is continuing restoration planning to address injuries caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and we would like your input regarding natural resource restoration opportunities in Louisiana. We will consider a range of restoration activities under the “Birds” and “Restore and Conserve Wetlands, Coastal, and Nearshore Habitats” restoration types.

$226 Million in Projects Approved in Second Open Ocean Restoration Plan

The Deepwater Horizon Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group released the Final Open Ocean Restoration Plan 2 (PDF, 493 pages) selecting 18 projects totaling almost $226 million to help restore fish, sea turtles, marine mammals and mesophotic and deep benthic communities injured by the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The plan and its projects represent the largest dedication of Natural Resource Damage Assessment funds to restore these oceanic marine resources in the Gulf of Mexico to date. The selected projects will:
