Louisiana Trustees Initiate Restoration Plan #6 for Wetlands, Coastal and Nearshore Habitats

Notice of Intent to Draft Restoration Plan in Louisiana.

The Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group is beginning the process of drafting a sixth restoration plan, this one focused on restoring and conserving wetlands, coastal, and nearshore habitats injured by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The plan will consider projects under the following restoration approaches: create, restore, and enhance coastal wetlands; restore oyster reef habitat; create, restore, and enhance barrier and coastal islands and headlands; and restore and enhance dunes and beaches.

Open Ocean Trustees Reopen the Comment Period for Draft Restoration Plan 2

In response to both extenuating weather conditions associated with the recent Hurricane Barry, and public requests, the Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group has reopened the public comment period for the Draft Restoration Plan 2. The new comment period will run through August 2, 2019. Comments already submitted in response to earlier announcements, including after the recently closed July 15, 2019 deadline, do not need to be resubmitted.

Changes to Louisiana’s Lake Charles Science Center Project Now Final

Following 30 days of input from the public, including a meeting in the community, the Louisiana Trustees finalized the Supplemental Plan for the Lake Charles Science Center (PDF, 103 pg). The plan calls for the science center and educational complex project to be co-located with the Lake Charles Children’s Museum at the future Port Wonder education and recreation development.

Mississippi Trustees Release Draft Supplemental Plan for Grand Bay

The Mississippi Trustee Implementation Group has released a draft supplement to the 2016-2017 Restoration Plan/Environmental Assessment, originally released in July 2017. The supplement, Mississippi Trustee Implementation Group 2019 Draft Supplemental Restoration Plan: Grand Bay Land Acquisition and Habitat Management (PDF, 13 pg), proposes to provide additional Wetlands, Coastal, and Nearshore Habitat restoration type funding to the Grand Bay Land Acquisition and Habitat Management Project approved in Restoration Plan I.

Gulf Sturgeon Monitoring and Adaptive Management Activities Will Address Data Gaps, Inform Restoration

The Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group will implement two monitoring and adaptive management activities to fill critical information gaps to support Gulf sturgeon restoration. The Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group released the Draft Restoration Plan 2 on May 15, 2019. Following the release, we held a public meeting on June 4, and two public webinars on June 11 and 13 to present the draft plan and  receive public comments. The Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group released the Draft Restoration Plan 2 on May 15, 2019, for a 45-day public comment period, ending on July 1. It proposes 18 preferred restoration alternatives for fish, sea turtles, marine mammals, and mesophotic and deep benthic communities. Following the release, we held a public meeting and two public webinars to present the draft plan and receive public comments. Based on requests, the Trustees have extended the deadline to submit comments to July 15, 2019.

Information from Trustee Council’s June Workshop and Annual Meeting Available

Outreach materials are now available from the June 5 and 6 Deepwater Horizon Natural Resource Trustees' public events in Pensacola, Florida.

The first event, a community outreach workshop, helped community members and stakeholders learn more about restoration funding and processes, and how to get involved in Gulf restoration by proposing projects to the Trustees. The second event, the Trustees’ fourth annual public meeting, provided an update on our work since our last meeting in July 2018.

Notice of Solicitation of Project Ideas

The Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group is planning restoration activities to address injuries caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. We would like your input regarding natural resource restoration opportunities in Terrebonne, Lafourche, Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard Parishes in Louisiana.

We will consider a range of restoration activities under the Restore and Conserve Wetlands, Coastal, and Nearshore Habitats Restoration Type. More specifically, we will consider these restoration approaches under this restoration type:
