The Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group presented webinars on October 16 and 17, 2018. The webinars provided an overview of the Open Ocean Draft Restoration Plan 1 and Environmental Assessment for Birds and Sturgeon and described next steps in the restoration planning process.

We also provided overviews of the Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group, the settlement with BP for damages caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the Trustees’ programmatic restoration plan developed to address those damages. Combined, the webinars had more than 50 attendees.

Mississippi Trustees to Hold Annual Public Meeting at November 13 Restoration Summit

The Mississippi Trustee Implementation Group will hold its annual public meeting on November 13, 2018, in Biloxi, Mississippi. The meeting will be held as a part of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality’s 2018 Restoration Summit. During the Restoration Summit, we will provide an update on our restoration planning efforts and be available to answer questions during the  open house. We look forward to seeing you at this meeting.

Status Update: Florida Restoration Area Draft Restoration Plan 1

On September 25, the Florida Restoration Area trustees released our Draft Restoration Plan 1 and Environmental Assessment, and held a public meeting to present it on October 2.

In light of the impacts of Hurricane Michael on our coastal communities and resources, the Florida trustees will need to gather more information on proposed projects in the Draft Plan. Some projects may have been impacted by the hurricane. We also want to allow the affected communities to begin recovery, and to be able to participate more fully in review of the Draft Plan when they are able.

Open Ocean Annual Meeting Webinar, November 14

The Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group will hold its annual public meeting via an interactive webinar on November 14, 2018.

During this meeting, we will present updates on the Open Ocean Restoration Area’s early restoration projects, first and second restoration plans, and monitoring and adaptive management activities. We’ll also provide an opportunity for questions and answers after the updates are presented. We encourage your attendance and participation.

Notice of Initiation of Restoration Planning in Mississippi

The Mississippi Trustee Implementation Group has initiated drafting of two restoration plans:

Supplement to Restoration Plan I

We are proposing to provide additional Wetlands, Coastal, and Nearshore Habitat restoration type funding to the Grand Bay Land Acquisition and Habitat Management Project that was approved in Restoration Plan I. The funds would allow for additional acquisition, management, and monitoring

Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group Seeks Public Comment on its First Draft Restoration Plan

The Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group has released its Draft Restoration Plan 1 and Environmental Assessment (PDF, 141 pg) for the bird and sturgeon restoration types described in the Trustees’ Programmatic Restoration Plan. Restoration Plan 1 evaluates six project alternatives, plus a “no action” alternative. Two projects propose restoration activities for injured migratory bird species that winter in the Gulf of Mexico, but nest in northern latitudes.  The Trustees have determined that these bird species may be most effectively restored by enhancing breeding success in areas where

Florida’s Island View Park Project Complete, Opening Soon

The Florida Trustee Implementation Group, and partners at Franklin County and The Trust for Public Land, recently announced the completion of Island View Park, which will provide improved public access to coastal resources of the Florida Panhandle.

This park is one of five components of the Florida Coastal Access Project, to facilitate and enhance the public’s access to surrounding natural resources, and increase recreational opportunities lost due to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
