Restoration Scoping for BP Oil Spill Begins

NOAA and other federal and state agencies announced that they are initiating a restoration scoping process for the Deepwater BP oil spill.  This is a key step in the ongoing Natural Resource Damage Assessment for the spill.

The restoration scoping process will allow NOAA and other federal and state agencies to take a comprehensive look at the types of restoration that may be required to offset potential impacts from the spill on habitat, fish, wildlife, and human use of those resources.

To organize the restoration scoping process and satisfy various legal mandates, the agencies will use a

Road to Restoration: Assessing the Damage to Marine Mammals

After the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in April, teams of biologists from NOAA and other federal and state agencies traveled to the Gulf of Mexico. Their mission was to assess the impacts from the spill to important natural resources including marine mammals such as manatees, dolphins and whales. There are 21 species of marine mammals in the Gulf, and all of them are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Six of them, all whales, are considered to be endangered under the Endangered Species Act.

NOAA was concerned that these animals might come into contact with the oil, either by

After the Deepwater BP oil spill in April, teams of scientists traveled to the Gulf of Mexico to document the impacts to sea turtles and their habitat. This team of sea turtle experts from NOAA and other federal and state agencies, universities, and private groups began to rescue turtles – including loggerheads and endangered Kemp’s ridleys – from the Gulf.

The turtles were taken to sanctuaries, like the Audubon Nature Institute, to be cleaned and rehabilitated. There, they were given activated charcoal to help get oil out of their digestive system, their mouths were cleaned with
