Project Ideas Requested for Restoration in Alabama

The Alabama Trustee Implementation Group is planning restoration activities for 2018-2020. We would like your input regarding natural resource restoration opportunities in Alabama. There were significant impacts from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on natural resources in Alabama, and there is a longer-term planning horizon proposed for the next plan. We are considering project ideas that focus on the following restoration types:

  • Wetlands, Coastal, and Nearshore Habitats
  • Habitat Projects on Federally Managed Lands
  • Nutrient Reduction (nonpoint source)
  • Oysters
  • Sea Turtles
  • Marine Mammals
  • Birds

Additional information about these restoration types is available in Chapter 5 of the programmatic restoration plan. In particular, please refer to Chapter 5 sections 5.5.2-5.5.4, and 5.5.9-5.5.12 and Appendix D sections 5.D.1, 5.D.2, and 5.D.4-5.D.6 for guidance on the goals, restoration strategies, and implementation considerations for each of these restoration types.

Project ideas will be evaluated for their ability to meet the goals of the programmatic restoration plan and the Oil Pollution Act of 1990. We may choose to focus on a subset of these restoration types as planning progresses.

You may submit restoration project ideas for these proposed restoration types online through the restoration portals to the Trustees or to the State of Alabama. If you have submitted project ideas in the past in connection with other Alabama Deepwater Horizon restoration planning efforts, we will consider them with respect to these specific restoration types and the process for project identification in the Trustees’ programmatic restoration plan. You will not need to resubmit those project ideas. Instead, you may simply reference the method and date of submittal along with the associated unique identification number of those previous project proposals.

Restoration project ideas or comments may also be submitted by e-mail to ALTIG@dcnr.alabama.gov or by mail to:

We request that you submit your project ideas by February 3, 2017 to provide adequate time for their consideration.
