In early May 2026, the Mobile County Commission celebrated a major milestone alongside the Alabama Trusteesthe official completion of a new 900-foot elevated boardwalk at Bayfront Park.

Featuring two covered pavilions overlooking coastal marshland, the project completes a continuous, half-mile, ADA-accessible paved and boardwalk walking loop around the park. The boardwalk was designed as a walking and nature-viewing amenity and is not intended for fishing access.

Construction took place from October 2025 through April 2026 at a cost of approximately $1 million. Including this project, Bayfront Park has received approximately $10.7 million in Deepwater Horizon oil spill restoration funding through the Alabama Trustee Implementation Group of the National Resource Damage Assessment program. This funding has helped restore recreational use services that were injured in Alabama as a result of the oil spill.

Bayfront Park has been a Mobile County Commission park for 100 years. Recent enhancements mean the park now features:

  • An approximately 900-foot-long pocket beach (protected sandy beach), the largest on Mobile Bay
  • A nautical-themed playground
  • Parking areas
  • Pavilions
  • Walking paths and elevated boardwalks
  • Restroom and park office building
  • Generally enhanced park infrastructure
